Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the option to challenge specific rulings from the official, mirroring the practice currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there is no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
