The speculation about this year's gaming ceremony has been intense, especially after host Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious image of a strange statue. The secret has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a fresh Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer featuring striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very opening of infernal gates.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio warned that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.
However, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This phrasing implies that the team could be building a faster-paced experience instead of another tactical title. For now, we can only guess, as only a announcement clip is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it pioneered the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, branching plots, and deep class systems—qualities that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs only possible with a distinct build with a personal story.
The series is also wonderfully flexible, letting players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Most missions can be completed in a variety of manners, often in surprising fashion.
- You might progress the story because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.
The Journey Continues
It is these creative systems that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can get ready for more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
