Seven accused individuals of German left-wing extremist group stand trial over series of violent incidents

Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, facing charges for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the moniker “the hammer group”.

International terror listing and prosecution case

Recently, the United States classified the organization as a terrorist group together with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany state the group was responsible for targeting locations in Germany and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several severely injured.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

The trial involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T., is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Regional context and organizational structure

The former East Germany has long been a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by the suspect, the network reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, disguises and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E, became a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the United States, freezes any assets they could possess within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany welcomed the American move and called on the government in Berlin to take similar action. In contrast, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The danger posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
