Australia's captain Poised for a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on 21 November in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about his chances of participating.

"It's clear that time is getting short and various factors around that, not only the physical problem, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. Hopefully it's the first Test. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with setbacks in multiple past seasons forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to make the squad for the Ashes.

He mentioned that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs in any case. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for another day, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
